On October 18, 2024, Daniel Stehle received the "Hans Machleidt Biochemistry Innovation Prize“, which is endowed with €15,000. Daniel completed his doctoral studies with the lab of Prof. Robert Feil (Project 1) and was also a member of our GRK 2381. He is currently a postdoc at the University of California in San Diego. Daniel received the prize for his innovative approaches to elucidating the spatial location of the cAMP/PKA signaling pathway in the interaction of tumor and immune cells. The prize was awarded at the first Hans Machleidt Symposium, at which renowned biochemists gave presentations. The new prize is to be awarded every two years from 2024 onwards. The primary target group of the award are successful and innovative young scientists in postdoctoral studies or in an advanced phase of their doctorate who are doing or have done their doctorate in biochemistry at the University of Tübingen.

We had a great Retreat in Herrsching am Ammersee (17.-19.9.2024). The event was combined with the first International Symposium “The Different Facets of Guanine Nucleotide Signaling”, which was jointly organized by GRK 2816 and GRK 2381. In addition to excellent presentations and poster sessions, there was also plenty of time for activities and discussions between junior and senior researchers. We are delighted that two of our doctoral students won a Poster Prize. Congratulations to Timo Kopp and Timo Hinnenthal (both Project 4), also known as “Timo and Timo” or Team “T'n'T”. Here are some impressions from the meeting in Herrsching:

July 30

From July 22-26 we held a Welcome Week for our new doctoral fellows of the 3rd cohort.

On Monday, July 22, after several presentations with important information on our GRK as well as the University Graduate Academy, we enjoyed a punting trip along the Neckar as our evening highlight. For the rest of the Welcome Week, the new fellows visited all the GRK labs and were introduced to their research topics and techniques. On Friday, we closed the Welcome Week with a productive feedback session.

We warmly welcome our new doctoral fellows and wish them a good start in the GRK.

We are looking forward to fruitful collaborations in the next years!

June 10

In April 2024, following a highly competitive application round, the GRK 2381 invited a group of shortlisted potential doctoral candidates to Tübingen for an on-site visit.

The candidates had the opportunity to present their previous research work and talk to the current GRK doctoral students and project leaders.

An informal get-together at a local brewery and visits of the GRK labs helped to get to know each other and find matching interests between candidates and existing project teams.

We hope that the site visit was a positive experience for all participants. We would like to thank all applicants for their interest in joining GRK 2381 and all current GRK members for their help in organizing this event.

Above all, we are pleased to welcome the selected doctoral students as new members of the GRK 2381. We wish them a good start in Tübingen and all the best for their doctoral projects in the GRK 2381.

Add-on Fellowship for Aylin Balmes from the Joachim Herz Foundation

The GRK 2381 congratulates Aylin Balmes on her successful application for an Add-on Fellowship for Interdisciplinary Life Science from the Joachim Herz Foundation.

The foundation supports young scientists who want to use interdisciplinary approaches to answer biological research questions while promoting “thinking outside the box” and networking.

The Add-on Fellows receive financial support over a period of two years for international networking and further training in a different subject – for example, biologists can immerse themselves in mathematics and modelers in life sciences. The individually and flexibly adapted funding enables research stays, conference visits, the purchase of aids such as laptops or software solutions and participation in fellowship meetings.
