Short Biography

Melanie Nagel is working as a postdoctoral researcher in the BMBF- founded project "Common public goods. The political organization of infrastructure provision in the regulatory state." In three selected policy arenas - ambulatory health care in rural areas, urban housing and provision of clean air - the project team interrogates the changing role of the state in the provision of these fundamental goods, their contemporary political contestation and the role of subaltern groups within these debates. Melanie Nagel studied Public Policy and Management at the University of Konstanz and received her doctorate there in 2014 on the topic "Polarization in political discourse. An analysis of dynamic knowledge and discourse networks by the example of "Stuttgart 21" (published 2016 by VS Springer). This was followed by lectureships at the University of Applied Sciences “Hochschule für Technik” (Public Administration), among others. From 2016 to February 2020 she worked as a research assistant and postdoctoral fellow at the Chair of Material Theory of the State in teaching and in the research project "The Influence of Science on Politics: An Analysis of the Knowledge Infrastructure in the Field of Climate Policy in Japan and Germany". In the winter semester 2018/19 she was a visiting scholar at the University of Arizona at the School of Government and Public Policy.

Her research interests are primarily in the areas of network research, policy studies, especially environmental and infrastructure policy, discourse (network) analysis, urban policy, and common goods.
