bwForCluster BinAC 2

bwForCluster BinAC 2 is part of the implementation concept of the universities of the state of Baden-Württemberg for High Performance Computing (bwHPC) and is available to all scientists in the field of Bioinformatics, Astrophysics, Geosciences, Pharmacy, and Medical Informatics in Baden-Württemberg. BinAC 2 hardware has been optimally tuned to this intended use to achieve high efficiency of applications in these scientific fields.

As headquarters of the nationwide HPC competence center for bioinformatics and astrophysics Baden-Württemberg, this cluster is operated at the Tübingen site by the Zentrum für Datenverarbeitung at the University of Tübingen and the specific applications within the framework of the bwHPC-S5 project are specifically supported.

The total system consists of a total of 206 compute nodes. There are the following different node configurations:

• 148 compute nodes: 2 x AMD EPYC Milan 7543 (32 cores each, 512 GB memory, 512 GB local SSD disk)
• 14 high-mem compute nodes: 2 x AMD EPYC Milan 7443 (24 cores each, 2048 GB memory, 1920 GB local SSD disk)
• 32 GPU nodes: like compute nodes, but with 2 extra Nvidia A30. Each equipped with 24 GB HBM2 ECC memory.
• 8 GPU nodes: like compute nodes, but with 4 extra Nvidia A100. Each equipped with 80 GB HBM2e memory.
• 4 GPU nodes: 2 x AMD EPYC Milan 9555 (64 cores each), 4 x NVIDIA H200 NVL (141 GB ECC HBM3e, NVLink)

The compute nodes are connected by HDR InfiniBand of spine and edge switches with a blocking factor of 1:8. The maximum size for non-blocking jobs is 896 cores.

The parallel file system Lustre provides two data storages. A project storage on HDDs with a capacity of 8.1 PB and fast work storage on SSDs with a capacity of 1000 TB.

The operating system used is Rocky 9.5. Application software and compilers are provided via the Module-System.
