Successful evaluation by external experts

The Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology does outstanding work – this is confirmed by the report of the international experts who evaluated the institute in October 2024.

External Evaluation Experts

The intra-university research institute of the University of Tübingen achieved top marks in the evaluation report. The categories evaluated included ‘Overall concept and research program',  ‘Research performance’, and ‘Influence and evidence orientation'.

Regarding the institute's concept and research, the reviewers concluded that the Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology is both academically excellent and practically and politically relevant and can compete with institutes of the Leibniz Association. Thanks to the introduction of the Research Hubs, the institute is researching important educational topics on an interdisciplinary level and, according to the report, is living up to its claim of developing outstanding leaders in all areas of the education system.

The evaluation report shows that the institute has successfully implemented the recommendations of the last evaluation and has further expanded its teaching and funding activities with four popular degree programs. According to the report, the transfer concept comprises training at various levels that introduces future education leaders to evidence-based educational research.

Knowledge is made accessible to practitioners and politicians through publications and an online magazine. Methodological knowledge is integrated into courses for gifted students and disseminated through studies and consultations, states the report.

Excellent assessment of the institute's work

In the long term, the experts recommend developing a strategy for pooling and disseminating knowledge on educational topics at state and federal level, in which the institute could play a leading role. The final summary is consistently positive: “In the period from 2019 to 2024, the institute further expanded its role as a world-leading research institute in education sciences and psychology and thus put itself in an exemplary position to address and answer major questions in research and educational practice.”

“This report confirms that our research is providing important impulses for education policy and that our strategy is working – a great result for all employees of the institute”, comments Professor Ulrich Trautwein, Executive Director of the Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology.  “We look forward to implementing the feedback and working with our partners and sponsors to further improve educational research as well as communication, application, and counselling.”

Background: Evaluation process at the Hector Research Institute

The evaluation of the Hector Research Institute comprised several steps:

  • In a self-report provided in advance, the institute documented previous achievements and future goals.
  • The evaluators then visited the institute to gain an impression on site. The program included presentations, poster rounds on the research topics of the six research hubs, and discussion rounds.
  • The experts then prepared a detailed report containing recommendations and evaluations. This report will serve as a basis for future developments and strategic decisions.
