Excursions and Mapping Courses

Field training is important in geosciences and we therefore endeavour to offer a wide variety of excursions, field practicals and mapping courses. We hope this page will help you to get an overview of the courses on offer and how you can register for them via the Geo Excursion Manager (see How to register for field courses).

Field Safety

Risks of tick-borne encephalitis (FSME)

State health and safety regulations make it mandatory to inform you on the risks of tick-borne encephalitis (FSME). For this purpose, the Faculty organizes information events.

You must attend one of these events!
Otherwise, you are not allowed to participate in any field course!

In summer term 2025 these sessions are on offer:

- Wednesday, 16.4., 10.00 (English)
- Tuesday, 29.4.,10.00 (deutsch)

Code of Conduct

Before you take part in a field course, you must read the Code of Conduct.

How to register for field courses

First you must register in the Geo Excursion Manager (you must be within the University network or use the VPN Client provided by the ZDV). Once registered, you can log in to see the courses offered.
You must then register separately for mapping courses and excursions (incl. the stratigraphisches Geländepraktikum).

Note: A mapping course is not the same as an excursion!

For each MAPPING COURSE you choose one of the following options:

must you cannot attend any other course offered; briefly explain why
want you would like to attend this course
don't want you could attend this course if necessary, but would prefer another one
can't you absolutely cannot attend this course, even if your preferred course is oversubscribed; briefly explain why

For each EXCURSION you choose want or don't want.

We do our best to provide you with your preferred option. However, as some field courses are oversubscribed, we recommend registering for more than one as a "backup".

You can change your registration at any time until the deadline.
Note the different deadlines!

Please cancel your registration if you no longer want to attend a field course.

B 205 / B 405: B.Sc. Geländeübungen 1 / B.Sc. Geländeübungen 2 (compulsory)

Note: Every Bachelor student has to attend ONE mapping course. Participation in a second mapping course may be possible in exceptional cases. However, a maximum of 7 field days will be credited for module B 205 / B 405.

If, for some reason, you absolutely cannot attend the course that is intended for you, please register for the other course and contact the course leader.

Accreditation of excursion days

Make sure that the excursion leader signs the excursion days in your field pass. Once you have completed the required number of days, your field pass must be signed by the respective module coordinator (preferably during the lecture period, as the coordinator is probably not in the office during the semester break).

If you have more than the required number of days for your Bachelor's degree, the excess days may be credited for your Master's studies.

Excursion days from other universities (e.g. from Erasmus exchanges) can be credited for your excursion module. For this, a signed statement from the excursion leader stating the number of days and a brief description of the excursion, must be submitted to the module coordinator.
