Wissenschaftlicher Werdegang

After studying at Sciences Po Paris, Sibylle Fourcaud joined the Sciences Po Centre for history as a PhD researcher. Since September 2024, she joined the ERC project “Atlantic Exiles: Refugees and Revolution in the Atlantic World (1770s-1820s)”. Her dissertation project focuses on the refugees from the Haitian Revolution who went to the French metropole, during and after the revolution, and on policies of relief that were created for them. The project aims at revealing how the French state dealt with its refugees on the long-term, from the fire of Cap-Français in 1793 to the end of the relief policy in 1911. It shows the echoes in the metropole of imperial upheavals and the development of a special kind of relief, designed at helping people identified as “victims” of a political event. It illuminates how imperial upheavals influenced the construction of the French nation, spatially, politically and administratively.
