“We are Africans, but we are not really in Africa”

In March 2026, representatives from European and African universities gathered at the CIVIS Forum for Research and Education in Casablanca, Morocco, to discuss equitable partnerships. A key moment of the event was the signing of the African Charter for Transformative Research Collaboration. This highlighted the ongoing challenges of African-European collaboration, as seen from the perspective of a colleague from Mozambique and myself.

Complex communication: areas of tension in inclusive science communication

The question of with whom and how to engage in scientific dialogue that also addresses previously neglected audiences and/or vulnerable groups (children and young people, people with cognitive impairments, migrants, etc.) is a complex one. These issues are addressed in science communication research in the DiversPrivat project. The following article discusses some of the questions addressed there.

Freedom that is meant how exactly?

“Freedom” is often contrasted with ‘ethics’ in science as if there were a zero-sum game: More of one means less of the other. Such ideas can even be found in contexts that otherwise provide extremely important impulses for current debates on academic freedom. Instead of halving both a meaningful concept of freedom and ethics, the dialectical enabling function of ethics for freedom (in) science should be emphasized.
