Requirements and application
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Geoecology or a related field with an overall grade (CGPA) equivalent to or better than 2,5 in the German grading system
- broad and fundamental training in natural sciences with a specialisation in Geoecology or environmental sciences (including at least 6 CP mathematics, 6 CP physics, 12 CP chemistry, 6 CP geology, 6 CP biology of organisms, 3 CP microbiology, 6 CP soil science, 6 CP ecology, 6 CP hydrology and climatology, 3 CP environmental chemistry, 6 CP quantitative data processing / modelling / GIS, 15 days field work)
If some of these courses (maximum 30 CP) are missing from your Bachelor's degree, admission is possible on the condition that you make up these courses. - English language proficiency equivalent to CEFR level B2 (e.g. TOEFL 79 iBT, IELTS 6.5, a degree with English as the medium of instruction, a German Hochschulzugangsberechtigung (Abitur) with B2 confirmation)

Program details
The Master in Geoökologie/Geoecology is an interdisciplinary program with a key focus on research. It builds on the wide range of knowledge in geosciences, biology, ecology, chemistry, physics and mathematics obtained in an undergraduate science degree. The program involves a quantitative understanding of the complex interactions between lithosphere, pedosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere as well as relevant methodological skills for successfully addressing environmental science issues.
Three fields of specialization are offered:
- Biogeoscience of the Land Surface
- Ecology and Nature Conservation
- Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology
Geecology in Tübingen offers:
- one of the largest and most diverse geoscience departments in Germany, where the entire spectrum of geoscientific teaching and research is represented
- one of the strongest biological research departments in Germany, which covers the entire spectrum of biology
- a modern, interdisciplinary course of study with a very broad range of courses anchored in geosciences and biology
The research environment of the geoscientific working groups at the University of Tübingen is characterized by diverse national and international scientific collaborations:
- Institut für Naturwissenschaftliche Archäologie (INA)
- Senckenberg Center for Human Evolution and Palaeoenvironment (SHEP)
- Helmholtz-Zentrum Potsdam, Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum - GFZ
- Helmholtz-Zentrum für Umweltforschung - UFZ
- Alfred-Wegener Institut, Helmholtz-Zentrum für Polar- und Meeresforschung - AWI
These excellent research activities and contacts allow students to learn about the wealth of geoscience research from applied geology and applied mineralogy, to structural geology, petrology, geochemistry, geophysics, micro- and vertebrate paleontology, and biogeology.
The Master's program in Geoökologie/Geoecology includes 4 compulsory modules (24 credits), 11 elective modules (66 credits) and the Master thesis (30 credits).
Students focus on one of the three fields of specialization (Biogeoscience of the Land Surface, Ecology and Nature Conservation or Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology).
Each specialization consists of 5 mandatory modules (30 credits). Further 36 credits are collected from a wide variety of classes taught in geoecology or neighboring programs. Recognition of an external internship is also possible.
A study abroad period is not expected.
For an optional study abroad you find information here: Erasmus+ program in Geoecology
Freiwilliger Auslandsaufenthalt
The Module Handbook of the M.Sc. Geoökologie/Geoecology describes the qualification goals and structure of the program, will help you to plan your studies and select the right modules, and specifies the study contents (type and scope of all modules, their courses, prerequisites and exams).
