Lecture: Brian Lander, "Translating Chinese Texts on Environmental Sources"

On Thursday, 16 Jul 2026, Prof. Brian Lander will give a talk on Chinese texts on environmental sources

Prof. Brian Lander (Brown University), “Translating Chinese Texts on Environmental Sources”
Abstract This talk concerns the questions Brian Lander encountered while preparing China’ s Environmental History: A Reader, a book that provides translations of various Chinese texts for teaching. What counts as “environmental”? What kinds of texts are ideal for teaching? What style of translation is appropriate? How much explanation should be provided for each text? In addition to addressing these questions, Prof. Lander will discuss the process of interacting with the dozens of scholars who contributed translations. He will conclude by discussing the current state of scholarship on China’s environmental history and promising directions for future research.
Bio Brian Lander is associate professor of history and environmental studies at Brown
University. He is the author of The King’ s Harvest: A Political Ecology of China from the First Farmers to the First Empire (2021) and other work on China’s environmental history.
