Prof. Susanne Weigelin-Schwiedrzik's main research areas are Chinese historiography of the 20th century, Chinese and East Asian history of the 19th and 20th centuries, contemporary Chinese discourse on the Great Chinese Famine and the Cultural Revolution, as well as contemporary Chinese policy, in particular on questions of the relationship between state and society as well as of central and periphery in the policy areas of public health, minority issues, urbanization and the environment. Susanne Weigelin-Schwiedrzik publishes and comments on issues of Chinese foreign policy and domestic political development in the PRC.
In 2020, following her retirement, Professor Susanne Weigelin-Schwiedrzik continued her teaching activities in the field of Chinese History at the Department for East Asian Studies and the Faculty for Historical and Cultural Studies at the University of Vienna, as well as at the Diplomatische Akademie in Vienna. From 2022 to 2027, she serves as a member of the Council (Akademierat) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
