Research

"I am interested in the ways in which people used their tools in prehistory and methodological approaches to reconstructing artefact biographies. To that effect, my formal training is in use-wear analysis of lithic artefacts. Employing a combination of optical light microscopy, digital microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and, importantly, experimental archaeology, I use the low- and high-power approaches of use-wear analysis to investigate functional traces and taphonomic wear on lithic artefacts. While I do not have a specific period or region of interest, since this approach can be adapted to research questions across space and time, my previous work has focused on the European Palaeolithic. I am currently expanding my research interests to include cut mark analysis to address questions on the role of marked objects in the Palaeolithic with regard to the origins of numeracy and information storage.“

Expertise & lab activities

  • Supporting collaboration between participating research groups through harmonized workflows, sample exchange and shared use of Central Biomolecule Lab facilities
  • Training and supervising users of the stable-isotope and ZooMS laboratories
  • Managing laboratory equipment and supporting the day-to-day organization of the laboratories
  • Processing archaeological and paleontological samples for stable-isotope and ZooMS analyses
