Roberto Robalinho received his Ph.D. in Communications from the Institute of Arts and Communications at Universidade Federal Fluminense in Brazil. His research focus on the relation between images, political and subjective production during Brazil's 2013 mass street protests. He is particularly interested in the liminal and contiguous relation between the masses on the streets and on the screens and how this affects political and subjective transformations in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Roberto won the "Biblioteca UFF" prize and published a book on the relation between the Iraq war and image based on his Masters research. He has also lectured in the Media and Cultural Studies department at Universidade Federal Fluminense. He has directed a series of short films and is in pre-production of his first long feature film that a won an important public grant, a documentary that visits the geographical and symbolical landscape of João Guimarães Rosa's literature.

Continuing his investigation on images and politics in relation to the Global South, his current research as a Teach@Tübingen fellow is to look at how contemporary Latin American cinema challenges a key concept in cinema, "the gaze", historically linked to colonialism, capitalism and patriarchy, in a sense that, these films moves us to develop another theoretical framework outside the boundaries of modernity.

Roberto Robalinho obteve seu Ph.D em Comunicação no Instituto de Artes e Comunicação da Universidade Federal Fluminense no Brasil. Sua pesquisa se concentra em como as imagens agenciam uma produção política e subjetiva dos protestos de junho de 2013 no Brasil. Mais especificamente, se interessa pela relação liminar e contigua entre a multidão nas ruas e nas telas e como isso possibilita transformações políticas e subjetivas na cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Roberto ganhou o prêmio "Biblioteca UFF" através do qual publicou um livro sobre a relação entre a Guerra do Iraque a as imagens baseado na sua pesquisa de Mestrado. Ele também lecionou no departamento de Mídia e Estudos Culturais da Universidade Federal Fluminense. Ele dirigiu uma série de curtas metragens e atualmente trabalha na pré produção de seu primeiro longa que ganhou um importante edital de produção, o longa é um documentário que explora o território geográfico e simbólico da literatura do Guimarães Rosa.
