Secondary Metabolite Genomics
Dr. Tilmann Weber
The main focus of our research group is the screening, isolation and characterization of novel secondary metabolite biosynthesis gene clusters and the development of bioinformatics tools to efficiently identify and analyze and annotate sequences of these biosynthetic gene clusters.
In one of these screening programs we were able to isolate the gene clusters encoding the biosynthesis of the polyketides lysolipin and kirromycin. Currently both clusters are beeing functionally characterized by knock-out mutagenesis, protein expression/enzyme assays and other molecular techniques.
In several collaboration projects, we are involved in the whole-genome sequencing and analysis of various actinomycete antibiotics producers.
