The Conference on Geoeconomics: New Developments and Historical Perspectives has, across two editions, established itself as a leading forum for scholarship at the intersection of economics, history, and international relations. Bringing together leading researchers from economic history, macroeconomics, international finance, and international relations, the conference combines long-run historical perspectives with cutting-edge empirical research on some of the most pressing questions in the global economy today.
Organized by Jörg Baten, Anna Gumpert, Ralph Lütticke, and Gernot Müller from the University of Tübingen and CEPR, together with Moritz Schularick from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, Sciences Po, and CEPR, the conference takes place at the historic Castle Hohentübingen.
The first edition, held on April 11–12, 2025, and funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), featured a keynote by Mathias Thoenig (University of Lausanne & CEPR) and sessions on trade, economic warfare, fiscal policy, global investment, and the links between geopolitics and inequality. The second edition, held on April 17–18, 2026, and generously supported by the Thyssen Foundation, broadened the program further with sessions on imperial trade policies, subsidy practices, espionage and industrialization, global banking, and hegemonic competition — alongside a keynote by Christoph Trebesch of the Kiel Institute and CEPR.
The organizers thank all speakers, discussants, and participants for their valuable contributions — with special thanks to the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Thyssen Foundation for their generous support, which makes this conference series possible.
