Parents as the key to musical success?

Patrizia Bieber successfully defends her dissertation.

By Rebecca Beiter

On January 30, 2025, Patrizia Bieber successfully defended her dissertation on the following topic:

Parental beliefs and the acquisition of technical-musical playing skills at primary school age: an investigation of instrumental playing from the perspective of empirical educational research.

In her work, Patrizia Biber focused on the beliefs of parents when their children play an instrument at primary school age. From the perspective of empirical educational research, she investigated which beliefs parents have concerning making music and learning an instrument and to what extent these are related to the learning progress of their children in instrumental lessons. She identified four groups of parents with different conviction profiles. It was found that children were successful at the instrument if the parents had a strong sense of responsibility for their children's musical education and were convinced that they had to provide their child with structural support when practicing but not control them. It could therefore be important to involve parents as important partners in the learning process.

Bieber was supervised by Prof Dr Richard Göllner, Prof Dr Barbara Busch and Prof Dr Jessika Golle.
