Tübingen Young Scientist Award in Science Communication Goes to PhD Candidate

Doctoral researcher Auguste Schulz is receiving an award for her activities in communicating artificial intelligence and machine learning.

[Translate to Englisch:] Auguste Schulz

Auguste Schulz started off a local group in Tübingen for the nationwide initiative "KI macht Schule," which is aimed at middle and high school students. Schulz conceptualised and organized visits by AI researchers to schools as well as field trips by students to the AI campus of the University of Tübingen.

In this context, the jury particularly highlighted the young researcher's commitment to children from families without an academic background: "Teaching students basic knowledge about artificial intelligence and AI-based technologies, such as ChatGPT or Dall-E2, is of great importance for our society. In the future, mastering such tools and knowledge of their possibilities and limitations will be a factor that significantly determines the social participation of each individual."

Auguste Schulz studied physics in Heidelberg and London and afterwards neuro-engineering in Munich. Since fall 2020, she has been working as a PhD student at the University of Tübingen in Jakob Macke's research group at our Cluster of Excellence "Machine Learning". The young scientist is doing her PhD at the interface between neuroscience and machine learning. As part of her PhD thesis, she is developing statistical methods that make it possible to understand how the activity of neurons in the brain is related to behaviour, for example complex movement sequences.

The Tübingen Prize for Science Communication, which is awarded once a year by the University of Tübingen, is intended to motivate researchers to become more involved in communicating scientific results and topics to the public. This year, the main prize goes to Prof. Rita Triebskorn. The award ceremony will take place on May 10, 2023, 6:00 pm, in the hall of the Pfleghof (Schulberg 2, 72070 Tübingen). The event is open to the public. Please register if you are interested in participation.
