Emotions and Capitalism
Organisiert von Susan J. Matt (Weber State University)
Capitalism has been sustained not just by trade relations, banks, merchants, ideology, and government policies, but also by specific, historically dependent emotional styles. In particular, a cluster of feelings, including happiness, envy, worry, and shame, have proven central to the capitalist order in industrialized and industrializing nations over the last two centuries. Likewise, feelings such as anger, fear, homesickness, and melancholy have often been regarded as threats to the capitalist order. This workshop, focusing on 19th and 20th century history, will use the history of emotions to explore how feelings have been crucial both to the existence and critique of capitalism.
