In the sixth newsletter of the DFG Center for Advanced Studies “Words, Bones, Genes, Tools”, we announce the return of Dr. Marisa Köllner to her position as scientific coordinator of the Center. We also discuss new research by Dr. Alexandros Karakostis and Dr. Gerhard Hotz on the lives of working women in early industrial Basel, and Prof. Katerina Harvati's admission to the prestigious Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

In the fifth newsletter of the DFG Center for Advanced Studies “Words, Bones, Genes, Tools”, we happily resume welcoming fellows to Tübingen in person after a long period of restrictions. We are also happy to introduce a new PhD candidate in linguistics, Tim Wientzek, who will be working on the correction of cross-linguistic data and Bayesian statistical methods for the imputation of missing data under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Gerhard Jäger.

News

We are delighted to welcome a number of new fellows to the Center over the summer.
In late June, Dr. Gereon Kaiping will be joining us from the University of Zürich for a one-month fellowship to work on phylogeographic methods in linguistics.
Prof. Dr. April Nowell will join us from the University of Victoria for two weeks from the 14th July.
In August, Prof. Dr. Rainer Grün from Griffith University will join us to resume his work on chronometric dating of human fossils. In the same month, we will also be joined by anthropologist Prof. Dr. Gustavo Politis from the Universidad del Centro de la Provincia de Buenos Aires for a stay of three months.

Seventh annual symposium

Last but not least, we announce the topic of our seventh annual symposium, which will take place on the 13th and 14th of October. The symposium, entitled “Evolutionary Perspectives on Tool Manipulation and Gestural Communication”, will explore new, interdisciplinary research on multimodality and its consequences for hominin evolution and interaction.

In the fourth newsletter of the DFG Center for Advances Studies “Words, Bones, Genes, Tools”, we are happy to introduce our new PhD candidate Brienna Eteson, who joined the Junior Research Group under the lead of Dr. Alexandros Karakostis in the summer.

I am happy to announce my pregnancy, which is why I will be on parental leave for some time. My position as scientific coordinator is taken over by my colleague Miri Mertner. Miri Mertner is introduced in the newsletter and on the website.

In the third newsletter of the DFG Center for Advances Studies “Words, Bones, Genes, Tools”, we are happy to introduce the affiliated Emmy Noether Research Group "The Language Dynamics of the Ancient Central Andes“. The research group, which was established in 2017, is funded by a separate grant to its director Dr. Matthias Urban through the Emmy Noether Program of the DFG.

In this newsletter, Dr. Matthias Urban introduces the Andean languages, their linguistic diversity and the research of his Emmy Noether Group. We are proud to say that although we were restricted by the pandemic situation, the year 2020 and the first half of 2021 were academically successful and we were able to welcome the first fellows in person this spring.
