"Futures under Construction: Contested Subjectivities in the Global South"

From Fanon to Bhabha to Spivak to Mbembe, the question of the subject is resurging in the South where it has long been one node of the demand for political and epistemic liberation, and is now, in another guise, making an unexpected return. In the wake of political and economic transformations that see the emerging prominence of Africa, Asian and Latin America in world affairs, a new sense of global consciousness is crystallizing at a time when the existence of the planetary community is under intense threat. A younger generation of thinkers from the Global South such as Mbembe, Viveiros de Castro or Baxi is reframing issues of selfhood and alterity, of personhood, of the human, of the commons and multitude. How can one construct political alliances from below that cut across geographical divides and make the South a place of the radical invention of transformed geopolitics of economics, knowledge, and culture. Global South perspectives on human rights, indigenous identity, ethnicity, gender, migration, global climate change, forms of governance, are increasingly seen to offer innovative perspectives on apparently intractable dilemmas for the global polity. Many thinkers from the Global South are embarked upon a fundamental and vital reconceptualization of subjectivity within the context of the present global crisis.

Coloquio Internacional

11 y 12 de julio, 2019

Cine urbano.

Moderation: Prof. Dr. Suzanne Goumegou
