Optimization of EOF analytics regarding per- and polyfluorinated chemicals (PFC) - toxicological relevance

[Optimierung der EOF-Analytik unter Berücksichtigung der Beiträge verschiedener Stoffklassen poly- und perfluorierter Verbindungen (EOFplus) – Teilvorhaben: Toxikologische Relevanz]

Within the frame of a joint project coordinated by TZW Karlsruhe and focusing on the presence and risk of per- and polyfluorinated chemicals (PFC) in the environment, a literature review on the effects of PFCs (PAP, diPAP, triPAP, polyfluoroalkyl acrylates and -ethers, PFPA, PFPIA, TFA, fluorotelomer acids und -alcoholes) is conducted, and regulation-oriented threshold values with toxicological relevance (e.g. HRIV, German ADI, LWTW or others) for distinct exposure routes will be elaborated. Literature present on such threshold values for perfluorinated carboxylates and sulfonates (particularly PFOA and PFOS) will be integrated in this study as well. On the basis of this review, literature data are assessed in view to potential toxic action of pfcs in close collaboration with the Federal Environment Agency, UBA, and the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, BfR.The background for the necessity to develop a toxicological risk assessment for the mentioned pfc substances is the present contamination of sites in the Rastatt and Baden-Baden area. In close collaboration with the consortium´s working groups that use analytical chemistry, with authorities of the state of Baden-Württemberg and with local stakeholders we will compare the actual PFC contamination levels with the deduced threshold values and develop an action plan. Data in the literature are assessed for their scientific quality, crucial gaps in toxicological knowledge will be outlined and need for future research will be substantiated. Finally, target group-oriented presentations of both the deduced threshold values and recommended actions will be implemented in the present case of contamination.
