Microwave circuits in magnetic fields
One of the most fundamental research directions in the group is the investigation and optimization of superconducting thin film microwave resonators in external magnetic fields, both with and without integrated Josephson junctions and quantum interferometers. For many research fields involving superconducting LC circuits and mechanical oscillators, magnonic systems, or trapped atoms/ions, the applications of external magnetic fields are inevitable. However, the properties of superconducting devices can strongly depend on the presence, strength and orientation of the external magnetic field. We are investigating how these fields impact the characteristics and figures of merit of niobium and YBCO microwave circuits and of the integrated Josephson inductances, and engineer resonators with properties suitable for the corresponding experimental settings of the target hybrid systems.
