Academic Profile

My research and teaching focuses on the ethnographic study of everyday digital cultures, combining the strengths of cultural and digital anthropology. The aim of my work is to contribute to urgent socio-political debates by shedding light on the transformations of everyday practices and experiences enabled by digital technologies (e.g. artifical intelligence, social media, digital image technologies, video games). I am currently leading projects on the AI-driven transformation of epistemic practices at the university, on AI-based survivor testimonies in the context of Holocaust remembrance, on social media feeds as "curatorial assemblages", and on the design of a digital museum app about populist truth-making. I am also Principal Investigator in the second phase of the Excellence Cluster Machine Learning for Science, where I work with colleagues from computer science, philosophy, and law to explore the potential and implications of AI in various scientific fields. In addition to these research fields, I contribute to the methodological development of digital ethnography and computer-assisted data analysis, combining cultural anthropology and digital humanities. Together with fellow researchers, I am also working on new formats for digital science communication and public engagement. More information on currently running and concluded projects, that I am leading together with several international and interdisciplinary colleagues, can be found on this overview page. At the University of Tübingen, I am also running the Digital Anthropology Lab, an international and interdisciplinary hub for the ethnography of everyday digital cultures.
