Erasmus FAQs

Application for a Study Place

When is the deadline for applying for an Erasmus study place?

The deadline for regular applications for Erasmus study places in the academic year 2024/25 was 31 January 2024. Remaining places are expected to be advertised in March 2024.

What to consider for the letter of motivation?

The letter of motivation should be approximately one page long and written in German or English. It is an internal document used by the Erasmus selection committee to evaluate your application and will not be forwarded to the partner university.

In your letter of motivation, please explain why you have chosen the partner universities you have selected and how the course program offered at the partner universities matches your study interests and focus. You are flexible when structuring your letter of motivation. However, due to the page limit, you are welcome to focus on your first one or two priorities.

What language skills are required for the application?

Solid language skills in the language of instruction are required for your study exchange. You should therefore be able to prove that you have the language skills required by the partner university at the time you apply for an Erasmus place. If the language of instruction differs from the national language, knowledge in the national language is also desirable and even compulsory at some partner universities. The required language level for each partner university can be found in the overview of partner universities in the application and information portal for Erasmus in ILIAS.

Which language certificates are accepted for the application?

Please note that each partner university has individual regulations regarding language requirements and the obligation to provide evidence for exchange students. Please check the language requirements and permitted certificates of our partner universities in the application and information portal in ILIAS and on the websites of your partner university(ies). The language certificate must still be valid at the time of application to the partner university. If the validity is not explicitly stated on the certificate, the language certificate is usually valid for a maximum of two years.

The following language certificates are generally recognized for the purpose of applying for an Erasmus place at the School of Business & Economics:

  • A-level certificate: if the language skills are stated according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
  • Passed language course at the Foreign Language Center or the Department of Modern Languages: If the language level of the passed course is explicitly stated on the transcript of records or a certificate of achievement according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, this can be recognized as proof of language proficiency. Alternatively, after passing a language course, a simple certificate of language proficiency according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages can be issued by the teacher or lecturer. Ideally, the certificate should be written in English.
  • DAAD language certificate: can be issued by a teacher at the Foreign Language Center after passing a course according to the language level of the course or by the Lektor:innen at the Department of Modern Languages. External students who have not completed language courses at the Foreign Language Center or the Department of Modern Languages must arrange a test appointment in good time.
  • UNICert certificate: after several consecutive language courses at the Foreign Language Center
  • Official language tests: see DAAD overview page on languages and language tests
  • Enrolment in an English-taught degree program: A certificate of English language proficiency can be issued if English is the only language of instruction and examination (currently for the Master's degree programs in Economics, Economics and Finance, Management and Economics and European Economics) or if only English-taught courses have been taken to date according to the transcript of records. Please contact masterspam prevention@wiwi.uni-tuebingen.de for further information.
  • Degree (equivalent to at least a Bachelor's degree in Germany) in the relevant foreign language from a recognized university in Germany

Further information can be found on the pages of the Foreign Language Center, the Romanisches Seminar and the Institute of English Languages and Literature.

In addition to the Department of Modern Languages, the d.a.i. also issues DAAD language certificates for English and Spanish (for a fee).

What if I do not (yet) have a language certificate at the time of application?

For your application for a Erasmus place at the School of Business & Economics, please submit all language certificates and information available to you that will enable us to assess your language proficiency, as the assessment of your language skills will be included in the selection process. In this case, you must obtain the official language certificate by the deadline for submission of the partner university. The completeness of your documents is a condition for acceptance at the partner university and is your own responsibility.
