Islamic Theology (Bachelor of Theology)
1. Study contents
This six-semester program provides students with a grounding in the classical disciplines of Islamic Theology. With a focus on critical reasoning, language training, interreligious studies, cultural and social studies, and the systematic theological sciences, students are given the tools to creatively engage with and respond to classical as well as contemporary theological debates in the European and German context as well as foster interreligious and intercultural dialogue.
The following disciplines are central to the study course:
- Qur'anic Exegesis
- Hadith and the Prophetic Tradition
- Islamic Doctrine
- Islamic Law (sources and methodology of law, history of law)
- Islamic History and Contemporary Culture
- Islamic Religious Education
- Islamic Philosophy, Mysticism and Ethics
- Interreligious Studies
- Arabic Language
Students of the Center also have the opportunity to undertake interdisciplinary research.
2. Entrance Requirements
To enroll at the university, students are usually required to hold an academic higher education entrance qualification (Abitur, Fachabitur, Entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences). If you have completed vocational training and have relevant professional experience, you may still be able to go to gain admission. For further information, please contact the student advice center. Students from abroad need a school diploma corresponding to university entrance level.
- The Bachelor of Islamic Theology is not bound to a specific religious confessional orientation and students with or with no religious affiliation are all welcome to apply.
Applicants must be proficient in German, as nearly all courses are conducted in the German language. Some courses are also taught in English; applicants are thus also required to have a competency in the English language.

4. Application
Courses start in the winter semester. Applications for the first semester have to be made online. Access to the online application portal will be enabled each year at the beginning of May. The closing date for the submission of applications is the 15 July (strict time limit!).

5. Duration of Study
The Bachelor’s degree comprises six semesters with a total of 180 credit points, and concludes with a Bachelor’s thesis. This degree qualifies students to begin a Masters course in Islamic Theology.

7. Career Options
This course equips graduates with the key skills that are required to work in the field of theology, religious and community education, and counselling in mosques and local communities. Alumni from our Centre have gone on to work in the academy, primary and secondary education, private and public sectors, health fields, chaplaincy and social work, and continue to branch out into ever more dynamic fields of study and practice.
