The study programme Bachelor of Education Lehramt Gymnasium is the first part of a consecutive teacher education programme (Bachelor of Education followed by Master of Education) for Secondary Teaching Degrees. The programme includes two subjects as well as educational sciences. Mathematics can be chosen as one of the subjects.
The programme is a scientific study. In both subjects the basic knowledge and methodology of the subject as well as its didactics necessary for the consecutive Master of Education Lehramt Gymnasium and the teaching at school are thought. Furthermore the didactics and educational science parts together with the school internships offer first professional expertise.
The mathematical part of the study programme B.Ed. is clearly structured and consists entirely of compulsory modules with restricted individual opportunities of choice. In the first year the students acquire the basics of Analysis and Linear Algebra, which are fundamental for all branches of mathematics. Based on this the mathematical knowledge is deepend in the classical fields of algebra and geometry as well as in the more application related fields stochastics and numerics. Parallel to the scientific lectures there are associated didactic courses who tackle the basic conceptual question of how to present and teach mathematics.
The Bachelor of Education Lehramt Gymnasium in mathematics is required for the consecutive study programme Master of Education Lehramt Gymnasium in mathematics. The successfull degree of the Bachelor of Education without the associated Master of Education is not sufficient for the admission to the teacher trainee period (Referendariat) and is, therefore, not sufficient to be employed as a teacher at a secondary school in Germany.
Detailed information is offered at the beginning of the study. For details about the single parts of the study, regular informative meetings are held by the department. For further information students may ask the departement's counseling office, the responsible study advisor or the dean of academic affairs.
