IfP Departmental Seminar: Retrofuturistic Realism: The Theoretical Aestheticization of Great Power Competition

Jochen Kleinschmidt (Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt), Wednesday, 18 January 2023 · 16 h c.t.: All lWelcome!

Jochen Kleinschmidt is a Post-doctoral Fellow at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt and coordinator of the Center for Latin American Studies (ZILAS). He has previously taught at the LMU in Munich, the Universidad EAFIT in Medellin and the Universidad del Rosario in Bogotá. Jochen Kleinschmidt’s research focuses on the history of Latin America as well as contemporary issues of socio-economic development. Moreover, he has published extensively on North-South relations and the intersection of spatial concepts in IR with world society and differentiation theory. In this talk, he argues that instead of functioning as an academic theory, realism in its recent revival has become part of the retrofuturistic aesthetics of our times. It thus becomes an element of an inter-temporal narrative entanglement, which describes contemporary societies as decadent, and lends its academic credentials to reactionary discursive strategies.
