Speaker: Dr. Nuri Ali Tahir (Universität Bursa / Universität Tübingen)

Wednesday, June 18th 2025, 16:00 c.t. / Room 124, Institut für Politikwissenschaft or online via Zoom

About the lecture:

The Republic of Cyprus has been a member of the European Union since 2004. As the island joined the EU divided, the EU acquis is not implemented in the North where the Government of Cyprus does not exercise effective control. The EU decided to lift the isolation of the northern part of the island in order to give a constructive answer to the positive vote for reunification by the Turkish Cypriot community in the 2004 Annan Plan referendum. The Green Line Regulation was established to allow the flow of trade from the North to the South along with the movement of people and goods. Twenty years later, the island still remains divided with some problems pertaining to the functioning of the Green Line Regulation. This talk will focus on the problematic aspects of Green Line Regulation that persist, affecting the daily life of the Turkish Cypriot Community and also limiting the intercommunal interactions with the Greek Cypriots.
