Let’s Talk about the Peace Boat! (15.10.2026)
Jasna Bastić, a global peace activist, will be in Tübingen to share her experience aboard the Peace Boat.
The Peace Boat
The Peace Boat is a passenger ship operated by a Japanese NGO of the same name, which promotes peace, human rights, and sustainability (Peace Boat). The NGO was founded in 1983 by a group of Japanese university students in response to perceived government censorship of Japan's military aggression in the Asia-Pacific region. The students chartered a ship to visit neighboring countries, aiming to learn firsthand from those who experienced the war and to initiate understanding and reconciliation through exchanges between people. Since then, the Peace Boat has organized over 120 regional and global journeys for peace and understanding, taken on more than 30,000 participants, and visited over 100 port cities.
The Peace Boat holds Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations and is engaged in the Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassador programme.
The Tübingen Student Delegation
A student delegation from Tübingen is invited to board the Peace Boat on September 12, 2027, in Piraeus, Greece. The journey ends on September 19, 2027, in Rome. The ports in between are Istanbul and Valletta. In the ports, we will meet local peace activists to learn more about practical projects in the field of constructive conflict management. On board, the delegation from Tübingen will be part of a cultural program that explores options for peacebuilding from a bottom-up perspective.
Study Trip for Students
The study trip is designed for students in the Master's program in Peace Research and International Relations. However, other students can also participate if spots are available. The total cost of the study trip is estimated at 1,300 euros. Experience shows that this will only cover about 30 percent of the expenses.
A Talk with Jasna Bastić
In her presentation, Jasna Bastić will introduce the audience to the broader idea of the Peace Boat and also address critical questions that arise when considering peace creation through cruises.
