Brazil Strengthens Its Lead in Latin America University Rankings 2026
USP remains at the top as Brazilian institutions dominate the regional top 10
Brazil has once again confirmed its central role in higher education across Latin America, according to the Times Higher Education Latin America University Rankings 2026. The University of São Paulo (USP) retained its position as the region’s leading institution for the second consecutive year.
Brazilian universities continue to dominate the ranking, securing seven of the top 10 positions, despite ongoing discussions about the potential long-term effects of policies implemented during former president Jair Bolsonaro’s administration. The University of Campinas (Unicamp) held on to second place, while the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) remained sixth. Notably, the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) climbed from 13th to 10th place, entering the top tier.
Three other Brazilian institutions experienced minor shifts of one position up or down but stayed within the top 10.
Beyond Brazil, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, which led the regional ranking from 2019 to 2023, moved up to third place. Mexico was also prominently represented, with Tecnológico de Monterrey ranking seventh and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) ninth. UNAM’s rise from 15th place marks the first time since 2017 that two Mexican universities have appeared simultaneously in the top 10.
