Dissertation project

My PhD thesis is concerned with exploring the scientific organization of Aristotle’s research on poetry. Accordingly, my aim is first to conduct a survey of Aristotle’s extant and lost works that investigate the domain of poetry and to reconstruct their intertextual and systematic relations. Second, it will be shown how fundamental Aristotelian notions (hylomorphism, four causes, essentialism) are modified and employed in the Poetics as a productive science to ensure a methodical presentation of the achievements of Aristotle’s prior research.
The intended results of my project include a more precise model of Aristotle’s notion of productive sciences and crafts, a deeper understanding of the features and structure of the Poetics due to an innovative perspective on the text as well as a more thorough reconstruction of its systematic context in the Aristotelian oeuvre.
