Prof. Dr. Babette Bühler

Babette Bühler is Tenure Track Professor of AI in Education at the Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology. Her research lies at the intersection of artificial intelligence and research on education, focusing on multimodal machine learning to investigate cognitive, behavioral, and social processes during learning. She is particularly interested in understanding how processes such as attention, engagement, and collaboration can be assessed using data from eye tracking, video, physiological signals, and digital trace data, in authentic educational settings.

A central aim of her research is to translate these insights into adaptive, AI-supported learning environments that provide individualized and context-sensitive support. She investigates how such technologies can foster learning and self-regulation while preserving learners’ agency. Her work also examines the effectiveness and broader implications of AI-supported learning technologies in real-world educational contexts.

Her current research includes the DFG-funded AEyeCoL project, which investigates gaze interactions during collaborative learning. In 2025, she received the FUTURE EDUCATION Early Career Award for her research on mind wandering and its automated assessment.
