Keynote at the University of Zurich

Several lab presentations at the conference of the European Sport Economics Association (ESEA) in Zurich.

This year’s conference of the European Sport Economics Association (ESEA) was organized by the Center for Research in Sports Administration at the University of Zurich (UZH). 

Dr. Ute Schüttoff and Dr. Felix Otto presented ongoing research projects of the department, including new findings from the project ‘Exploring the effectiveness of transparency and truncation for mitigating gender and nationalistic biases in judging panels’, which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

As the closing of the conference, Professor Tim Pawlowski gave a keynote on ‘Sport as an ‘emotions lab’’. Following up on his previous keynote at the MathSport International conference in Luxembourg (2025), he presented and discussed several core projects organized under the umbrella of the Tübingen Data Science and Sports Labs, including

  • Suspense and surprise in European football (with R. Flepp & T. Richardson). Published in the European Journal of Operational Research.
  • Exploring entertainment utility from football games (with D. Rambaccussing, P. Ramirez, J. Reade, & G. Rossi). Published in the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization.
  • Emotional cues and the demand for televised sports: evidence from the UEFA Champions League (with T. Richardson & G. Nalbantis). Published in the Journal of Sports Economics.
  • Emotional drinking: surprise, suspense, and alcohol use during soccer matches (with L. Fischer, M. Nagel, & A. Kelava). Available at SSRN.
