Institute of Sports Science

The beginnings

In 1819, a place to do gymnastics was opened at the University of Tübingen with the permission of the University’s Vice-Chancellor; it was closed down a short time later.

Gymnastics in Tübingen was carried on in secret up to 1838, at which time the Senate accommodated the desire for reinstatement of the location for gymnastics. The argument for it maintained that it “could facilitate the resolving of some of the transgressions against discipline”.

In 1839, the location for gymnastics was re-established and, with that, the Gymnastic Institute in Tübingen was founded.
