Statutes

Article 1
(1) The Foundation bears the name "Dr. Leopold Lucas Foundation". It honours the memory of the rabbi Dr. Leopold Lucas, a patron of scholarship of outstanding merit, who was born in Marburg an der Lahn on 18 September 1872 and died in Theresienstadt on 13 September 1943.
(2) The Foundation exists for the exclusive and direct purpose of awarding the Leopold Lucas Prize and the Leopold Lucas Young Academics Prize.
(3) The Foundation exclusively and directly pursues public-benefit purposes within the meaning of the chapter on "Tax-Privileged Purposes" of the German Fiscal Code. It does not operate for its own gain or pursue profitability as its primary purpose.
(4) The donation of funds to another public-benefit corporation and/or corporation under public law for use in accordance with the purpose of the Foundation is permitted. The fulfilling of the purpose of the Foundation by means of the donation of funds shall not, however, preponderate.
No person shall benefit from expenditure which is alien to the purpose of the Foundation, or from disproportionately high remuneration.
The funds of the Foundation shall be used only for the purposes defined in its Statutes.
Article 2
The Dr. Leopold Lucas Prize is awarded once annually, if possible in the month of May, by the Dean of the Faculty of Protestant Theology for outstanding work - confirmed by appropriate publications - in the fields of theology, the history of ideas, history and philosophy. An oeuvre which contributes significantly to the advancement of relations between individuals and peoples is to be given particular consideration.
Article 3
a) The Dr. Leopold Lucas Young Academics Prize is awarded annually in the context of the award ceremony of the Dr. Leopold Lucas Prize by the Rector of the University of Tübingen on the recommendation of the Deans of Faculties 1 (Protestant Theology), 2 (Catholic Theology) and 7/10 (Philosophy and History) for the following subjects:

Catholic Theology
Philosophy
History
b) A Dr. Leopold Lucas Memorial Lecture is held regularly, the subject and form of which is determined by the Committee responsible for the awarding of the Leopold Lucas Prize.
Article 4
(1) The Foundation is a dependent foundation without legal capacity, supported and managed by the "Vereinigung der Freunde der Universätit Tübingen (Universitätsbund) e.V." ("Union of Tübingen University Foundations").
(2) The assets of the Foundation are composed of the capital which Consul General Franz D. Lucas transferred to the Universitätsbund for the purpose specified in Article 1, as well as the proceeds from this capital and any other sums donated to the Foundation. In particular, the assets of the Foundation include the donation of DM 50,000.00 made in 1979 by Robert Bosch GmbH.
(3) The way in which the assets are invested and the size of the sum to be distributed annually for the two Prizes are determined in each case by the Board of the Universitätsbund in consultation with the Founder.
(4) The Universitätsbund shall donate to the Foundation annually on 31 December, commencing in 1985, a sum of DM 8,000.00. In every fifth year, commencing in 1990, the Universitätsbund shall review - in consultation with the Founder and in consideration of changes in purchasing power - whether and by what amount the annual donation is to be adjusted.
(5) The assets of the Foundation shall be used only for the purpose specified in Article 1 (2).
(6) The Founder shall be informed of the annual accounts.
(7) The financial year is identical to the calendar year.
Article 5
(1) The awarding of the Prize is the responsibility of a Committee composed of the following members:
the Dean of the Faculty of Protestant Theology
three further full professors from the Faculty of Protestant Theology nominated by the Faculty Board
two full professors nominated by the University Senate
one member of the Board of the Universitätsbund
the Founder or his representative
(2) The Committee is quorate when six members are present. The Dean of the Faculty of Protestant Theology calls and chairs the meetings.
Article 6
The Founder may, during his lifetime or by testamentary disposition, designate a legal successor, to whom the powers granted in the above regulations shall pass. The same applies to the legal successor.
Article 7
Should the Universitätsbund be dissolved, the assets of the Foundation shall pass as corporate assets (Section 119 (1) of the "Universitätsgesetz" (Universities Act) of Baden-Württemberg) to the University of Tübingen, which is to use them directly and exclusively for public-benefit purposes. The assets passing in this way shall be used only for the purpose specified in Article 1.
Article 8
These Statutes replace the Statutes of 01 January 1986 and their amendment of 09 November 2001 with effect from 13 May 2003.
