Open Letter: Motion for Solidarity by CIN Chairman Peter Thier

The CIN startet the following motion for solidarity with Nikos Logothetis on May 5th, 2015, after that esteemed scientist had announced an end to his work with non-human primates. That work has indeed been aborted in the meantime, with the last primate experiments performed in April 2017.

The authorities have been investigating allegations of animal abuse at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics sind 2014. So far, no charges have been filed.

05 May 2015

It is with deep regret that we learn of CIN-member Nikos Logothetis’ decision to stop his internationally acclaimed work with non-human primates.

Those opposing animal research may perceive this decision as a victory. We, however, are of the clear opinion that it constitutes a substantial loss as well as an alarming development when, after months of massive threats and hostility towards himself and his staff, an internationally esteemed scientist like Nikos Logothetis finds himself driven into a corner to such an extent that he would rather give up than continue to face this menace. Tübingen as well as the federal-state of Baden-Württemberg have thus lost valuable ground on their path towards assuming a leading role in innovative science and research.

We explicitly wish to express our gratitude to Theresia Bauer, the Baden-Württemberg Minister for Science, Research and Art, for taking a clear stance against the aforementioned climate of intimidation and hostility. We also concur with her that any attempt to purposefully misinterpret Nikos Logothetis´ step as an admission that non-human primates may no longer be needed to address specific questions in brain research is simply cynical. We would like to add that such attempts are all the more inacceptable if made by persons whose visible position in the state´s administration should oblige them to impartiality.

There cannot be the slightest doubt that Nikos Logothetis keeps sharing our conviction that any attempt to better understand the working of the human brain - these 1500g of tissue, consisting of some 1010 neurons, each of them more complex than the most powerful computer humans ever built - will not be possible without invasive studies of living brains of intact organisms with whom we share important phylogenetic commonalities - i.e. non-human primates. Only a better understanding of the healthy brain will allow us to develop new or better approaches to the treatment of brain disease.

We very much hope that this sad demonstration of the damage fundamentalist fury can do to individual scientists and to the science endeavour at large will encourage all those who have as yet shied away from doing so to take a clear stand and speak out for the irrefusable needs of excellent and innovative research.

Support for the above motion for solidarity has been overwhelming. Close to 5,000 supporters from all over the world have made their solidarity public. Their names can be found below.
