Field trip 1: Cycladic Islands (Naxos and Syros), Greece
During this three-weeks field trip, we visit the two islands of Naxos and Syros, located in the Aegean See south of Athens. Naxos is a textbook example for a so-called metamorphic core complex. Normally we spend three days on this island, investigating the prograde metamorphic evolution perpendicular to the core´s axis. Besides, we visit interesting outcrops of garnet-and tourmaline-rich granitoids, metabauxites lenses, mantle-peridotites, pseudotachylites and quarries of the famous Naxos marble.
Syros is world famous for its spectacular and extensive outcrops of high-pressure rocks including blueschist, eclogites, metagabbros, marbles, gneisses, Mn-cherts and ultramafitites.
On this island, our two-weeks mapping exercise takes place.
Field trip 2: Isle of Mull, Scotland
During this ten-days field trip, we visit the Isle of Mull, which belongs to the Tertiary North Atlantic Igneous Province related to the opening of the North Atlantic. The island consists of a Proterozoic basement (Lewisian migmatites and Torridonian Psamites), which is intruded by the Caledonian Ross of Mull granite (stoping, contact metamorphism). The basement rocks are covered with Mesozoic sediments. During the Tertiary a thick pile of flood basalts were erupted (spectacular basalt columns), which were later intruded by gabbroic and granitic rocks of the so-called intrusive central complex. We also visit one of the worlds finest ring dykes and observe interesting features like magma mixing and the formation cone sheets.
