Anna Kouremenos (Ancient History and Classical Archaeology) is a major contributor to insularity theory. In her current research, she employs evidence from disparate sources (archaeology, Greek and Roman mythology, numismatics, geography, ethnography, and digital humanities) to compare five small islands with Crete and other areas of the Mediterranean. The strategic locations of the islands of Gavdos, Leuke, Antikythira, Kythira, and Thera made them economic centers (e.g. for purple dye production), locations of exile and imprisonment, havens for traders and travelers crossing the Mediterranean, and stepping-stones for ships sailing to and from North Africa, topics with comparability throughout island studies. Kouremenos focuses on key concepts of relevance to the network, such as island networks and connectivity, aiming to understand how a close proximity with Crete aided or hindered islanders in their response to Hellenistic and Roman rule.
