Abstract Folk documents from Shaanxi dating from the 17th to 20th centuries are diverse in type and abundant in quantity. They serve as important historical materials for the study of Shaanxi’s economic, social, urban, and village history during the Qing dynasty, the Republic of China, and the early years of the People’s Republic of China. In the course of conducting research on regional history and historical geography of Shaanxi, Prof. Shi Hongshuai has collected a large number of folk documents - including contracts, account books, land registers, and diaries - and has carried out preliminary organization and research.This presentation focuses on introducing the main types of Shaanxi folk documents from the 17th to 20th centuries and their value as historical sources.
Bio Shi Hongshuai is a professor and doctoral advisor at the Institute for the Study of Northwest Historical Environment and Socio-Economic Development at Shaanxi Normal University. He also serves as a member of the Historical Geography Committee of the Geographical Society of China and as president of the Xi’an Historical Geography Society. He has been a visiting scholar at Central Washington University (USA), Gakushuin University (Japan), and the Needham Research Institute at the University of Cambridge (UK). He has led and completed multiple research projects, including those funded by the National Social Science Foundation of China and major projects of the Ministry of Education’s research bases. His publications have received more than ten awards, including the Second Prize for Outstanding Achievements in Philosophy and Social Sciences of Shaanxi Province and the First Prize for Outstanding Social Science Achievements of Xi’an.
