To mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11, three M.A. American Studies students at the University of Tübingen explore the lasting impact of the attacks on American society, politics, culture, and collective memory.
As part of the Applied American Studies module, Sergen, Helkin, and Robin discuss the legacy of 9/11 with Ulrich Hägele in a special Radio Micro-Europa podcast episode. Drawing on insights from the seminar "9/11", taught by Dr. Thomas Gijswijt, the conversation explores a wide range of topics, including the attacks themselves, the War on Terror, Afghanistan and Iraq, memorialization, popular culture, conspiracy theories, and the continuing political and cultural significance of 9/11 twenty-five years later. The episode combines academic perspectives with personal reflections on how 9/11 continues to shape public discourse and collective memory. Among these perspectives is that of Dr. Gijswijt, who had moved to New York City only a week before September 11, 2001, offering a personal connection to the events and their aftermath.
This project was developed within the Applied American Studies module at the University of Tübingen in collaboration with Radio Micro-Europa and the Zentrum für Medienkompetenz.
