Input, fate and effects of trace organic pollutants in the environment

In the Campos project P1 Rivers we are appling a combination of non-target screening (NTS) by high-resolution MS and cell-based bioassays (toxicity-tests) to identify chemical risk drivers and to quantify shifts in signal patterns indicative of turnover processes of complex compound mixtures.

Project P1 Rivers

General approach of P1

In the “River” project P1 we combine the following methods to answer the research questions:

  • Lagrangian sampling of river segments of contrasting characteristics
  • Target and non-target screening with low and high resolution mass spectrometry (LRMS and HRMS) to detect pollutant patterns and transformation products
  • Cell-based bioassays for different modes of toxic action as risk-scaled sum parameters of mixtures of pollutants
  • Mass-balance models using chemical and bioanalytical equivalent concentrations (BEQ)

Achievements

  • Separation of photochemical and non-photochemical processes using diclofenac as an in-situ actinometer
  • Combining chemical and toxicological analysis to assess water quality in the Ammer River and its tributaries
  • Quantification of the attenuation of micropollutants in different reaches of the Ammer River
  • Analyzing micropollutant and toxicological effect dynamics during a rain event

Project S1

A major part of the CAMPOS research projects relies on field investigations, sampling campaigns, and laboratory analyses. The service project S1 supports therefore all field- and lab-oriented CAMPOS projects by

  • guidance in site investigations and field sampling campaigns
  • analytical measurements of tracers and water chemical parameters
  • non-target screening approaches for a wide range of compounds.

Antibiotics in sewage sludge

Antibiotics are a significant group of pharmaceuticals that are extensively used by humans and animals against microbial infections. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have been generally suggested to be a dominant source of antibiotics present in the environment. The analytical determination from sewage sludge is challenging
