The Section of Cellular and Molecular Microbiology of the Institute of Medical Microbiology and Hygiene is headed by Samuel Wagner. Research in the section deals with assembly, structure, and function of bacterial virulence-associated secretion systems, in particular with type III secretion systems of Salmonella Typhimurium and the type IV secretion system of Legionella pneumophila.
