Tübingen School of Education (TüSE)

'Educational sciences' in teacher training in Tübingen: broadly oriented and excellently positioned

Depending on the university location, the 'educational sciences' include the disciplines of educational science, (educational) psychology, empirical educational research and (educational) sociology.

The University of Tübingen is home to internationally outstanding and renowned educational scientists.
In order to realize the goal of an excellent interdisciplinary research culture in educational science and subject didactics in the teacher training subjects and related institutions, the University of Tübingen has undertaken far-reaching structural changes since the TüSE was founded. A total of 18 new professorships for teacher training have been created, twelve in subject didactics and six in educational sciences.

The term educational sciences or the field of educational science is used in various ways in Tübingen:

1) Institutions that conduct research in educational science (Institute of Educational Science, Hector Institute for Empirical Educational Research, Leibniz Institute for Knowledge Media and the Tübingen School of Education, Center for Ethics in the Sciences and Humanities). Since 2019, colleagues from didactics and educational science have been researching joint topics in special interest groups under the umbrella of TüSE Research.

2) the educational science degree program for teachers (B. Ed. and M. Ed.). At the Tübingen location, this refers to courses offered in particular by the Department of School Pedagogy at the Institute of Educational Science and the Hector Institute for Empirical Educational Research, but also by the International Center for Ethics in the Sciences and Humanities and the Tübingen School of Education.

3) As part of the first and second funding phase of the “Quality Offensive for Teacher Education”, five initially funded (2015- 2023) and four professorships in educational science at the Institute of Educational Science and the Hector Institute for Empirical Educational Research, which have since been replaced.
