The Master of Education (M. Ed.) is structured as follows:
School Internship Semester
After applying for the Master of Education, you will receive, if admitted, a “ticket” from the university with which you can apply online for the school internship semester. This begins in September with the start of the new school year and has a duration of 12 weeks. During this time, you will also be supervised by the Seminar for the Further Training and Education of Teaching Staff (Upper Secondary Stage) to which your school is assigned, in addition to attending accompanying events throughout your internship.
If you wish to start the Master of Education in the summer semester, apply during the preceding winter semester. In this case, you will complete the school internship semester in the second semester of the Master of Education. Please refer to the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affair’s handout on the school internship semester.
The Education Science Studies (ESS)
The Education Science Studies (ESS) serves as preparation for scientifically sound and professional activity in school and teaching. It is mandatory for all teaching students and consists of several modules. It is part of both the Bachelor of Education and the Master of Education. The educational science program in the Master of Education deepens the educational science issues introduced in the Bachelor and builds on the qualifications acquired there. Module 1 of the BWS frames the school internship semester. The Institute of Education (Department of School Pedagogy) is responsible for the educational science program. On the website, you can find the program’s module guide. The contact person for the educational science program is PD Dr. Dr. Martin Harant.
The Extension Subject
Besides the two main subjects and the educational science program accompanying the teacher education program in the B. Ed. and the M. Ed., you can study another subject in a supplementary master’s program, the so-called Extension Subject, either in the scope of a main subject or that of a supplementary subject. This is only possible after completing the Bachelor of Education successfully. However, students enrolled in the B. Ed. can acquire preliminary credits for the master’s program in many subjects, provided they are at least in the third semester of the B. Ed. in one of the first two main subjects. In the extension subject, another master’s thesis must be completed in addition to the master’s thesis of the two main subjects.
