Forage crops - safe for farmland birds?
Legume–grass and alfalfa crops are important in organic farming but frequent mowing can cause severe breeding losses in farmland birds. In the KLeVer project, we tested management measures to reconcile forage production with bird conservation. The results identify effective mowing regimes and uncut refuge strips as key elements to support Skylark, Grey Partridge or Corn Bunting.
