Kūṭiyāṭṭaṃ is an ancient theatre form from Kerala, which has deep roots embedded in Sanskrit literature. Particular emphasis is placed on the representation of women in ancient Indian literature and the role of women in both manual writing and performance. In this study, the variations that female characters reveal when they are perceived by male and female artists/ scholars are also examined.
