TIDA-Talk: "Physics in De mundo: Cosmology and Theory of Elements"

Abstract:
De mundo offers recognizably Aristotelian cosmology and theory of elements. The cosmos is one and eternal, divided into the supralunar world made of ether and the sublunar world made of the four elements, all arranged in a series of concentric spheres. Things made of ether move in circle and do not undergo generation and corruption, whereas things made of the four elements move in various directions and all undergo generation and corruption. However, the author of De mundo modifies the Aristotelian doctrines in some interesting ways. In this talk I will discuss the main modifications and speculate about their background and aim.
