Fast Response Probe

Current measurements with the five hole probe on MASC can be used to measure fluctuating parts of the airflow in flight with a resolution of up to 20 Hz. Accurate measurement of the transient wind in the outdoor environment is needed for the estimation of the 3-D wind vector as well as turbulent fluxes of heat, momentum, water vapour, etc. Further development to the established system is done by implementing a Fast Response Probe (FRP) which is capable of a significantly higher resolution of transient flow. Using precise pressure sensors with NIST-traceable calibrations and an acoustic calibration of the FRP's pneumatic system, as well as a precise and fast sampling data acquisition system, improve the resolution at least by one order of magnitude.
