My dissertation centers on the question of how music expresses ideas. Following this guiding thread, it examines theories of music and their relation to the Idea in Kant, Schelling, and Hegel.
This study develops German Idealist idealism through the distinctive lens of music, while laying a comprehensive theoretical foundation for my subsequent research in the philosophy of music. Addressing this core question enables us to better understand philosophical transformations in later thinkers such as Nietzsche, Adorno and Wittgenstein, and to investigate whether a hidden musical thread runs through their philosophies.
The project takes Kant’s Critique of the Power of Judgment as its starting point, and offers a synthetic analysis of how Schelling and Hegel inherit and critique Kant’s framework.
