Qualitative Methods and Methodologies

Prof. Dr. Jörg Strübing

Profile

This section is dedicated to research and teaching with and on qualitative/interpretative methods and methodologies in empirical reseach

The course program in area of qualitative methods start in the bachelor level with an introductory reading on qualitative methods and methodologies (accompanied by study groups with student tutors). Further Courses in subsequential terms deal with theoretical and empirical issues of micro sociology, which are further devoloped and methodologically grounded in courses on practical data analysis.

In our master programm we build on these basic methods competencies. Our master students center their studies around an empirical student project that spans over three subsequential terms. Each project is coached by a faculty member and profoundly tutored by an alumni. (Selected topics of recent projects were: "The culture of automats in everyday life" or "On the social construction of living spaces: Building processes in neighborhood groups"). These projets are accompanied by further courses on selected issues in qualitative methods and methodologies. Students are encouraged to write their master thesis on their empirical project.

Please find further links and information on and around interpretive methods at Methodenzentrum der Wirtschafts- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Fakultät.

Together with the facultiy's Methods Center and the Institute for Education Sciences the department organizes yearly spring and summer schools on interpretive methods. Foran overview of past and current events please refer to: Spring and Summer Schools.
