Discovery of New Antitumor Drug-Candidates: Hit-to-Lead Optimization

The project “Discovery of New Antitumor Drug Candidates: Hit-to-Lead Optimization” focused on the preclinical development of inhibitors of protein kinases – an important class of drug targets in cancer and other diseases. The combined expertise in medicinal chemistry (Gehringer group, Tübingen) and drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics (DMPK) profiling (Lima group, UFRJ) facilitated our early academic drug discovery efforts. The Gehringer group generated potent kinase inhibitors, which are being tested for their pharmacological properties by Prof. Lima’s team. The project also supported online seminars, Summer School participations and mobility of junior researchers.

“Through the Tübingen Research Takeoff Program, I initiated a collaboration with Prof. Lima’s group at UFRJ, merging our expertise in medicinal chemistry and in vitro DMPK profiling for early drug discovery. The program supported my participation in the 30th Summer School in Medicinal Pharmaceutical Chemistry in Rio de Janeiro and enabled a very productive three-month research stay for a UFRJ student in my lab. I look forward to further strengthening Brazilian–German research ties.”

Prof. Matthias Gehringer

„As part of the Tübingen Research Takeoff Programme, Prof. Dr. Matthias Gehringer, Professor at the University of Tübingen, Germany, carried out a working visit to our University. During his stay, he gave the mini-course Highlight in Medicinal Chemistry to postgraduate students of the 30th edition of the Summer School in Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry – Professor Eliezer Barreiro (XXX EVQFM-EB). This visit also fostered exchanges with students from the Laboratory for the Evaluation and Synthesis of Bioactive Substances (LASSBio®, http://www.lassbio.com.br), which later resulted in Dr. Lucas Silva Franco’s study mission and my own technical visit to the University of Tübingen. These initiatives strengthened the scientific collaboration between the two laboratories, opened up possibilities for joint experiments, and confirmed the mutual interest of both institutions in further deepening this cooperation.”
